Many dogs are sentenced to a life in a shelter when things get too stressful at home. This is avoidable in most cases. When a dog is trained properly, the can be a beloved family member. Training your dog can be simple to do, if you use the following steps.
It may take several times for your dog to learn new commands. You might have to repeat the same exercise up to fifty times before your dog remembers it. Continue repeating the command patiently, and eventually your dog will understand it.
Ask yourself how your dog is seeing things. You can easily become frustrated with your pet if they do not learn the basics quickly or not at all. Try to think the way your dog does. You should think about how your dog might see things in the world.
It is easy to train a roll with treats. Start by getting the dog to lay down. Then, put a treat close to the floor near the side of the dog’s head, and gradually raise it over its head to the opposite side. Ideally, your dog will use his nose to follow the treat, rolling his whole body in the process. As he is rolling over, give the “roll over” command, and do this repeatedly until he can roll over with just the command and without the treat. Don’t get frustrated if it takes a few tries, once he learns this trick he’ll be the star of the dog park!
Dogs have tunnel vision and will focus on one thing to the exclusion of all else. With frequent practice, your dog will begin to focus on you and the signals you are giving him instead of other distractions.
Avoid accidents if you want to housebreak your dog. Watch your pet to identify his unique behaviors and signals that indicate when he must relieve himself. Constant whining, sniffing, and pacing around the house are all very common signs. When you know the cue, take action immediately. Quickly leash your pet and lead him to an area where he can relieve himself. When he does go, praise him! Soon, your dog will signal you when he needs to go outside.
It’s not impossible to have a dog that is healthy and happy. You cannot achieve this, however, unless you can provide your dog with the affection and discipline he requires. By following these steps you can make your dog a part of the family.
